By water and by bike: tracing the legacy of millers
The Little Danube was once lined with water mills, many of which were later converted by millers into wheel-driven mills. One of the last remaining examples stands on the riverbank near the village of Tomášikovo in the Matúšova zem Region. The waterwheel mill in Tomášikovo is a national cultural monument.
Built in 1895, it has been preserved in its original condition, including fully functional machinery, and was recently completely restored. A new visitor center dedicated to the history of milling has been established nearby. It is an ideal destination for both cyclists and paddlers on the Little Danube, who can enjoy a unique view of the mill from the water.
The surrounding landscape is enriched by pollard willows, inviting visitors to explore other technical monuments in the region. The journey through milling heritage continues in Jelka and Dunajský Klátov. A permanent exhibition on the history of milling along the Little Danube is presented by the Homeland Museum in Galanta.
